This design was featured in Aaron Philip's closing look for RUNWAY 1. It was conceived as a graphic for individual interperation and meaning. Below are two ways that I choose to look at it:
1.) QUEER (OVER) CAPITAL
A reminder to prioritize, honor, value and indulge your queer identity and the collective capital of LGBTQIA+ people before appeasing the external forces that seek to capitalize on them. Fuck pinkwashing. Fuck rainbow capitalism.
2.) QUEER CAPITAL
What do queer people as a community have, combined between us all, that we can use as capital? (the term "capital" is used here to represent any resource that can be pooled and shared, whether that be a financial, material, skill-based, lived-experience or emotional resource.) How can we use what we have to get what we want?”
I believe queerness is about prinicples, not prescribed particulars. It is more about opposition than it is about sexuality. This design is a reflection of my constant interest in de-centering established conceptions of business structures, particularly how queer principles can exist at the core of a business operating within the apparel industry.
